The 5th step requires that you shed your pride and admit toanother person all of your failings, and this can be hard. Pray for thestrength and courage to do it well, and when it's done, you will have trulydemonstrated your commitment to God and man, and taken a great step towardsreal recovery.
Almighty God, my inventory has shown me who I am, I admit to my wrongs, yet I ask for Your help in admitting my wrongs to another person and to You. Assure me, and be with me, in this step, for without this step I cannot progress in my recovery. With Your help, I can do this. Amen.
Regarding the five steps of prayer outlined by the Guardian, and recorded by Mrs. Moffett in her booklet the 'Call to Prayer': these, he wishes me to explain, are merely personal suggestions and need not, therefore, be adopted strictly and universally by the believers.
2nd Step: Arrive at a decision and hold this. This decision is usually born during the contemplation. It may seem almost impossible of accomplishment but if it seems to be as answer to a prayer or a way of solving the problem, then immediately take the next step.
3rd Step: Have determination to carry the decision through. Many fail here. The decision, budding into determination, is blighted and instead becomes a wish or a vague longing. When determination is born, immediately take the next step.
4th Step: Have faith and confidence that the power will flow through you, the right way will appear, the door will open, the right thought, the right message, the right principle, or the right book will be given to you. Have confidence and the right thing will come to your need. Then, as you rise from prayer, take at once the 5th step.
Many pray but do not remain for the last half of the first step. Some who meditate arrive at a decision, but fail to hold it. Few have the determination to carry the decision through, still fewer have the confidence that the right thing will come to their need.
But how many remember to act as though it had all been answered? How true are these words ?Greater than the prayer is the spirit in which it is uttered? and greater than the way it is uttered is the spirit in which it is carried out.
You mention that the answers to your prayers never seem to have come through clearly. Mrs Ruth Moffett has published her recollection of five steps of prayer for guidance that she was told by the beloved Guardian. When asked about these notes, Shoghi Effendi replied, in letters written by his secretary on his behalf, that the notes should be regarded as "Personal suggestions," that he considered them to be "quite sound," but that the friends need not adopt them 'strictly and universally." The House of Justice feels that they may be helpful to you and, indeed, you may already be familiar with them. They are as follows: ... use these five steps if we have a problem of any kind for which we desire a solution, or wish help. Pray and meditate about it. Use the prayers of the Manifestations, as they have the greatest power. Learn to remain in the silence of contemplation for a few moments. During this deepest communion take the next step. Arrive at a decision and hold to this. This decision is usually born in a flash at the close or during the contemplation. It may seem almost impossible of accomplishment, but if it seems to be an answer to prayer or a way of solving the problem, then immediately take the next step. Have determination to carry the decision through. Many fail here. The decision, budding into determination, is blighted and instead becomes a wish or a vague longing. When determination is born, immediately take the next step. Have faith and confidence, that the Power of the Holy Spirit will flow through you, the right way will appear, the door will open, the right message, the right principle or the right book will be given to you. Have confidence, and the right thing will come to meet your need. Then as you rise from prayer take immediately the fifth step. Act as though it had all been answered. Then act with tireless, ceaseless energy. And, as you act, you yourself will become a magnet which will attract more power to your being, until you become an unobstructed channel for the Divine Power to flow through you.
"Dear God please help me to set aside everything I think I know about [people. place or thing] so I may have an open mind and a new experience. Please help me to see the truth about [people. place or thing]. AMEN." (This prayer comes from the Chapter to the Agnostic, primarily pages 47 and 48).
Dear Lord, Help me to see and admit that I am powerless over my alcoholism. Help me to understand how my alcoholism has led to unmanageability in my life. Help me this day to understand the true meaning of powerlessness. Remove from me all denial of my alcoholism. (This prayer is developed from the chapter, More About Alcoholism)
'If you have a resentment you want to be free of, if you will pray for the person or the thing that you resent, you will be free. If you will ask in prayer for everything you want for yourself to be given to them, you will be free...Even when you don't really want it for them, and your prayers are only words and you don't mean it, go ahead and do it anyway. Do it every day for two weeks and you will find you have come to mean it and to want it for them, and you will realize that where you used to feel bitterness and resentment and hatred, you now feel compassionate understanding and love.'
God, please help me to complete my housecleaning by admitting to another human being the exact nature of my wrongs. Please remove any fears I have about this step and show me how completion of it will remove my egotism and fear. Help me to see how this step builds my character through humility, fearlessness and honesty. Direct me to the right person who will keep my confidence and fully understand and approve what I am driving at. Then help me to pocket my pride and go to it, illuminating every twist of character, every dark cranny of the past so I may complete this step and begin to feel near to you." (72:1, 72:2, 73:0, 74:2, 75:2)
My Higher Power, My daily prayer is to best serve you,I pray I may continue to grow in understanding & effectiveness;Help me to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment and fear;Help me to be willing to have You remove them at once;I must be willing to discuss them with someone immediately;I will make amends quickly if I have harmed anyone; And then I will turn my thoughts toward helping someone else; Please help me to remember to practice love and tolerance of others. (84:2)
"God, please show me all through this day, what my next step is to be and please grace me with whatever I need to take care of the problems in my life today. I ask especially that you free me from the bondage of self-will."(87:1)
My advice to someone ready to complete the fifth step is to keep in mind that getting it all out there on the table is a great opportunity to finally let it all go. Clean out the cobwebs of your past, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the lighter load. Enjoy the freedom and unconditional love.
By the third step, recovering alcoholics have decided to turn their will and their lives to the care of God or this Higher Power. It is here where they truly accept their powerlessness against their disease and hope for salvation.
As you reach this step, it can be challenging to find the right words to ask God to remove your shortcomings. This AA prayer is meant to help you find the right words and the pathway to leave your shortcomings behind.
Also known as the St. Francis Prayer, from the early 1900s. The eleventh step is about continuing the journey to betterment. Here, you continue to find strength from prayers and meditation and ask God to give you the power to carry that out.
Higher Power, as I understand You,I pray to keep my connection with YouOpen & clear from the confusion of daily life.Through my prayers & meditation I ask especially forFreedom from self-will, rationalization, & wishful thinking.I pray for the guidance of correct thought & positive action.Your will Higher Power, not mine, be done.
Rather than looking at step 5 as a fearful experience, think about how clear your conscience will be once it's done. Many people call it "freedom" and say they experience peace and calm they haven't felt in years.
Although there are many forms of Indigenous spiritual technology, and each of you reading this will come to understand various forms, I wanted to suggest a particularly powerful tool useful for your investigative practices. I sometimes refer to this practice as prayerful action in service to others.
