We carry out extensive testing to ensure that beta releases work as expected, and are confident you won't have serious problems using them. However, please remember that beta releases are work in progress, and may not work as well as official releases.
Skype has released a new beta version for Linux that finally adds long-awaited support for video chat, the single most requested feature for Skype on Linux. The Skype 2.0 beta, which is available for download from Skype's web site, includes a number of other minor feature improvements in addition to the new video functionality. You can check out the release notes for an overview.
The Skype 2.0 beta requires Qt 4.2.1, D-Bus 1.0, at least 20MB of free disk space, and a video card driver with Xv support. Packages are available in DEB and RPM formats for several distributions. A tarball with a generic binary is also available.
I tested the Skype 2.0 beta with video support on the Asus Eee PC, which includes a built-in webcam. I started by downloading the Xandros package onto the Eee from Skype's Linux download page. Next, I opened a terminal on the Eee by hitting ctrl+alt+t and installed the package by typing the following at the command line:
Show single window for conversations with the same user When Show conversations in separate windows is enabled, all messages from a user or group of users will be displayed in the same top-level window when Show single window for conversations with the same user is checked.
Skype has announced that it is planning to roll out screen sharing to its iOS and Android apps soon. The feature is currently included in the Skype Insider betas. Microsoft did not announce a public release timeframe but features usually roll out within a couple months.
A few months ago, I warned readers that a glaring privacy weakness in voice-over-IP telephony service Skype allows anyone using the network to quickly learn the Internet address of any other Skype user. A new beta version of the popular Microsoft program appears to have nixed that privacy leak with a setting that restricts this capability to connections in your Skype contacts only.
I tested this beta version of Skype against a free Skype resolver service that has been reliable in the past at looking up IP addresses tied to specific Skype accounts. When I ran it against my everyday account using and older version of Skype, it successfully found my home IP. When I created a new Skype account with the Skype 6.5 beta on a separate machine, enabled the privacy feature and then tried the lookup again, it failed to locate my IP.
To get the feature, Windows users will have to download the latest beta version of the Skype client. This will include the functionality, but may not be as stable as the regular official release in other areas. It runs on Flash, so that will be required to use the feature. Also, as Skype says: "The beta version of Skype for Windows desktop with Video Messaging in preview may not be available in all markets", you might find that you can't get it working just yet.
A number of other fixes have accompanied the Video Messaging feature on this beta release (6.5), including the issue where the ability to call is disabled in some situations, and the stability of the software to call when no camera is present.

Developers must currently make a request for tracks to be added to their snap via the #store-requests forum category. Releases are verified and checked to ensure that reasonable user expectations are being met. For example, only 3.2.* versions are accepted into a 3.2 track.
Beta is the first level towards the stabilisation of what was before a fast moving stream of changes. Specific projects may have slightly different terminology for such releases (alpha, beta, etc) but all of these are welcome on this risk level. These releases will almost certainly have passed some sort of review and QA, but may still have unfinished parts. Breaking changes are still relatively common here.
After 30 days with no further updates, a branch will be closed automatically. The replacement snap will then be chosen as it would be with closed channels (see below). For example, beta/fix-for-bug123 will fall back to beta after the fix-for-bug123 branch is closed.
Screen sharing on Skype is now available to the masses, as the feature is officially out of beta and rolling out to iOS and Android devices right now.(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
As the popular saying goes, when it rains, it pours. After having been exposed to the somewhat older, moreconservative 4.X version of Skype for a very long time, we now have a beta release for Skype 5.0, roughly sixmonths since the alpha edition. That one turned out to be quite decent andfairly stable.
Trivial. Get the RPM from the officialsite, and install it. I believe the DEB file behaves just as timidly, although I did not do any testing onthe relevant architecture. Best of all, Skype for Linux 5.0 Beta installs as a separate package from theproduction 4.X version, so you can actually run both side by side. You can also identify them by differenticons as well as binary paths (/usr/bin/skype versus /usr/bin/skypeforlinux). This may change in the future,but it is great for beta testing.
These bots aren't Skype per se - but they are Skype, you see. They did moderately badly, but they areentertaining. The annoying bug is - at least in this beta version - if you scroll and then try to click on anyone, the first click will jump you back to the top of the list. Most bots come in three major flavors - health,with the necessary disclaimers, travel, and games. Highly relevant stuff isn't there yet. But then, neitherSiri not Alexa nor Cortana do anything meaningful today. A novelty without being novel.

Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennström, from Sweden, and Janus Friis, from Denmark.[17] The Skype software was created by Estonians Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, Jaan Tallinn, and Toivo Annus.[18] Friis and Annus are credited with the idea of reducing the cost of voice calls by using a P2P protocol like that of Kazaa.[19] An early alpha version was created and tested in spring 2003, and the first public beta version was released on 29 August 2003.[20][19] 2b1af7f3a8
