Finally had some time for it this morning, prepared all the cables and stuff , but decided to take baby steps approach - so started with just replacing the power adapter. I went for a MacBook USB-C one, and the problem was gone! Then I've downgraded the power source to an iPad power adapter (12W) - still everything was fine. So finally I've returned to the original power supply - and it's also fine. WTF.
Yes, transcoding video, especially H.264 and H.265 requires some significant computer power. My server uses an i5 and 8 GB of ram. I also have a second server I test on, and it has a smaller AMD processor. Both have been sufficient for my home use, but most transcoding is only for audio on Roku devices, so not a real heavy power user.
I checked a number of my 1080 Blu Ray rips, and none have a reference frame count higher than 8. I did find one of my 1080 test clips that has 12 frames, but Serviio and Roku seem to think the file is unplayable, as it isn't visible in RMP at all. SO I copied it onto a USB drive. Now my Ultra 4800 sees it, but gives me an error message saying the file might be damaged or corrupt. I tried playing it in Windows Media Player, and it froze the player. I tried the Windows 10 video player, but it wouldn't play (no error, no freezing). I tried playing it with VLC and was finally successful playing the file. I thin tried playing it on my Nvidia Shield, which can play virtually anything. It too had problems. It would play, but the video was jerky and out of sync with the audio. And it locked up my Shield to the point it rebooted itself and still wouldn't boot without a complete power cycle. I can't say if my particular file isn't playable because of the number of reference frames, but as you noted the standard allows a total of 16 and mine only has 12. I'm going to run my file through Handbrake and see if I can clean the file up. I'll see what the frame count is after I finish.
