Opinion: Blame Dabo, Not Trevor Lawrence

For the second straight year, Clemson's defense is the reason Trevor Lawrence didn't hoist the National Championship trophy. In last years Championship game, Joe Burrow threw for nearly 500 yards and 5 touchdowns in LSU's route over Clemson, 42-25. This year was eerily similar with Justin Fields and the Buckeye offense. The Buckeyes scored 49 points and totaled over 630 total yards of offense. At one point midway through the second quarter, Clemson had allowed Ohio State to score a touchdown on five straight possessions.

Where was the coaching? Where were the adjustments? The Tigers defensive players were getting ejected for targeting(even if it was an awful call), taking bad penalties, and blowing assignments leading to wide open touchdown passes. Justin Fields, who could barely move from a rib injury, was doing anything he wanted, and Clemson was making running back Trey Sermon look like Barry Sanders. How can we blame Trevor Lawrence for that? Is it Lawrence's fault that head coach Dabo Swinney stupidly called out Ohio State all week in the media? Isn't that a trap that a freshman in his first big game makes? Not a veteran head coach who should know better than to act like a fool at a press conference. Dabo Swinney is the reason Lawrence will leave the program winning only 1 national championship. Dabo had a chance to become the next dynasty. The next Alabama. The next Nick Saban. And he blew it, not his quarterback.
