Opinion: Rodgers, Not Mahomes, is Obvious MVP Choice

With three games left in the 2020 NFL season, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is still the betting favorite to bring home the league MVP award. Vegas(Bovada) now has Mahomes -195 to win the leagues most valuable player award while Rodgers still sits at +130.

Coming off of Patrick Mahomes first Super Bowl victory, the Chiefs had the runaway best odds to win the Super Bowl this season at 5-1. The Chiefs team, for the most part, stayed intact from the championship winning season. Travis Kelce is considered to be the top tight end in the league and the WR duo of Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins are capable of scoring on every play. After choosing top running back, and former LSU Tiger, RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, many were convinced the Kansas City offense got even better in the offseason. On the other hand, Green Bay Packers fans were left scratching their heads after the team fell to the 49ers in the NFC Championship game last season. The Packers offense couldn't compete with San Francisco's defense who held them scoreless in the first half before winning the game easily 37-20. Aaron Rodgers couldn't make up for the lack of talent at the skilled positions in Green Bay and it was obvious. The Packers then made one of the oddest draft choices in recent memory by selecting a quarterback with the teams first round pick. They skipped over wide receiver like Chase Claypool and Tee Higgins to select Utah State QB Jordan Love? Yes they did. Again, Rodgers was left with no offensive weapons and hoping WR Devante Adams could stay healthy for the upcoming season. The teams Super Bowl odds fell all the way to 18-1, 9th in the league.

The reason all that information needed to be stated is to show how Aaron Rodgers shouldn't be playing this good in 2020. Rodgers is 37 years old, he's playing in his 16th season and you cant name three receivers on the Packers team. I don't even think Rodgers himself could name his receivers. Lets take out Devante Adams for now, we'll come back to him later. Rodgers next best receiver is Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Valdes-Scantlings was a 5th round pick out of the University of South Florida and so far this season has dropped a shocking 10% of his targets and only catches about 50% of them. Rodgers next favorite target is TE Robert Tonyan. I told you that you've never heard of these people. Tonyan was a quarterback in college before transitioning to a WR at football powerhouse Indiana State (that was a joke). Coming into this season, Tonyan had 14 receptions in 27 career games. The next tight end on the depth chart is free agent signing Marcedes Lewis. I'm sure Rodgers was so grateful that the team went out and signed a 36 year old former Jaguar who hasn't caught more than 15 passes in three years. So far, Lewis has a whopping 9 catches for 98 yards on the season. Now we circle back to Devonte Adams. I wont deny that Adams isn't great. He's surely a top 10 receiver in the league, but to not address his frequent injuries would be wrong. Adams has already missed 3 games this year after missing 4 the year prior. Rodgers played great in those matchups leading his team to a 3-0 record.

Aaron Rodgers not only has better numbers than Patrick Mahomes this season, he's doing it with so much less. Mahomes is going to win the championship again this year and will probably take home the Super Bowl MVP, but as for the regular season, Rodgers deserves the respect as the most valuable.
